Webinar Series 2018

Webinar 1: Make sense of occupational STFs: A practical guide to factors that affect balance recovery in the workplace Dr. Duncan and Dr. Komisar

Title: Make sense of occupational STFs: A practical guide to factors that affect balance recovery in the workplace

The webinar will be presented in English on November 16th, at 1:00 PM (ET) and will last 60 minutes.

Webinar description:

One of the biggest challenges facing ergonomists today is how to effectively approach work-related slips trips and falls. While some resources exist, information and guidelines for ergonomic practitioners with respect to the factors that influence occupational fall risk and strategies for successfully preventing falls in the workplace are limited.

The goals of this webinar series are to:

1. Improve understanding of the factors that influence postural instability and effective balance recovery strategies.

2. Give practitioners the tools and strategies they can use to develop safety controls to decrease fall risk in workplaces.

The webinar series will consist of two 1-hour Webinars. During the first webinar (November 16, 2018), Dr. Duncan and Dr. Komisar will discuss the factors that influence fall risk and successful balance recovery in the workplace, as well as strategies to perform more effective fall risk assessments in the workplace. During the second webinar (November 23, 2018) they will build upon these ideas by discussing developing safety interventions, including modifications to building design and worker training.

Dr. Ducan Originally, from Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada, Dr. Carolyn Duncan's research focuses on factors that influence postural control and balance recovery, particularly in occupational and built environments. Dr. Duncan received Bachelor and Masters degrees (University of New Brunswick) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Memorial University of Newfoundland) with a focus in maritime ergonomics and human factors. She then worked as a post doctoral fellowship in neuroscience at the University of Waterloo and Toronto Rehabilitation with Dr. Bill McIlroy and Dr. Avril Mansfield. During this time she also worked in the field of ccupational health and safety and martime safety training. Before accepting her current position at Michigan Tech Dr. Duncan held a two year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Virginia Tech's Grado School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Dr. Komisar Born and raised in Calgary, Canada, Dr. Vicki Komisar completed her Bachelors degree in Engineering Science (University of Toronto), and her Masters (Imperial College London), and Doctoral degrees (University of Toronto) in Biomedical Engineering. . Her research interests are in promoting safe mobility in the community, which she targets through academic studies, policy recommendations, and product development. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Stephen Robinovitch’s Injury Prevention and Mobility Laboratory at Simon Fraser University.
